2025 Research Laureate Award Winner

Dr. Leventhal is a Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences and the Director of the Institute for Addiction Science at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. A clinical psychologist, public health scientist, educator, policy advisor, and university administrator, he specializes in addiction research. His work spans four key areas: (1) youth use of tobacco, cannabis, and opioids; (2) health disparities in addiction; (3) science to inform public policies for regulating tobacco and other addictive consumer products; and (4) cancer and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Dr. Leventhal has a highly accomplished publication list and laudable track record of funding for his research, including over 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and over $90 million in research funding. Dr. Leventhal’s research has made a significant public health impact by translating addiction science into actionable policies at both federal and global levels. This is exemplified by his contributions to the U.S. Surgeon General Report Series, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and the World Health Organization.
