Department of Health Sciences
University of Missouri

Dr. Harvey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of Missouri.

Her scholarship focuses on health disparities among African American and other underrepresented populations, leveraging participatory models of qualitative research to inform chronic disease self-management interventions. She also integrates culturally competent methodologies to engage rural and aging communities, particularly those at heightened risk for type 2 diabetes.

She has examined a broad range of social and environmental factors impacting health outcomes in underserved populations, employing community-based participatory research to develop tailored solutions. Her work extends beyond local initiatives, contributing to the broader body of evidence aimed at reducing health inequities on a national scale.

She has also implemented structured mentorship strategies that guide her students in presenting at major conferences, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and securing competitive grant funding. Through immersive, hands-on research training, Dr. Harvey fosters the next generation of health disparities scholars.

Her approach is anchored by collaborative partnerships with community leaders, ensuring that sustainable interventions reflect genuine local priorities. She continues to advance public health education by equipping her mentees with the critical skills needed to address complex health challenges.

In addition, Dr. Harvey has demonstrated a deep commitment to diversity in academia, providing individualized support for first-generation and underrepresented students. Her inclusive and student-centered mentorship model not only strengthens research outcomes but also transforms lives and communities.

>Quote from Dr. Harvey:

“I am profoundly grateful to receive this Mentorship Award. My own experiences as a first-generation Black female researcher inspire me to cultivate inclusive, empowering environments for underrepresented students. Mentoring is a sustained journey—one that enables students to flourish academically and personally, and to lead research that truly impacts their communities. I am honored to be recognized by AAHB for my work and will continue to prioritize mentorship as a cornerstone of my career.”
