Dr. Xiao is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Population Health Sciences and Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, where she leads cutting-edge research on youth mental health and suicide prevention. Leveraging mental health informatics, epidemiology, and policy analysis, Dr. Xiao has pioneered machine learning and AI-driven approaches to identify risk factors and prevention strategies for suicide and mental health disparities. 

Her research, supported by multiple federally and industry-funded projects as a Principal Investigator—including grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), Google Research Scholar Program, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—has shaped public health policies and informed clinical interventions. Dr. Xiao has published over 90 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as JAMA Psychiatry, JAMA Pediatrics, and JAMA Network Open, and most have been widely cited, including her recent work on suicide profiling, which was awarded the most-viewed papers in JAMA Psychiatry in 2024.

Beyond research, Dr. Xiao actively engages with policymakers, clinicians, and data scientists to develop precision-targeted interventions for youth mental health. Her work has been covered by national and international media and cited in policy reports. She has been invited to present her research at leading national and international institutions, furthering the dialogue on mental health equity and population well-being.
